Foreign exchange currency trading involves the following terms: at-the-money, in-the-money, and out-of-the-money. What is the difference between the three?
If an option trade is being placed, the forex trader’s attention is focused on where the forex spot position price is. At-the-money strike price is what is known as spot price.
At-the-money option, or ATM, occurs when the option strike price is at the same position as the spot is. The ATM position enables the merchant to get near to the action with not much monetary obligation as compared to the in-the-money option or ITM. The spot and the at-the-money option move at 50% of the activity; this is termed as the delta factor. Although ATMs has less monetary obligation, it is the ITM that is regarded as the strategy for a successful position in option purchase. In other words, the buyer gets the maximum movement of the bought option with the spot.
The OTM or out-of-the-money is the most practiced trade – the popular one. Why? By way of choosing a strike price that is far from the spot, the merchant is expecting the move. The forex merchant’s hope is that at the time of option trading, the price will move in the direction of the strike price, or better yet, exceed it.
How does the trader make money? The options merchant makes a profit by being on the right place when the spot position price is in fact moving towards or beyond the strike price at date of expiration, or just moves along the path towards the price’s direction.
