How Much Money Do You Need To Make To Qualify As A Small Business?

in business

I want to start selling more artwork online, but I’ve temporarily put it on hold as I can’t find anywhere how much I need to make before it’s considered a small business. I live in Alabama, btw.

There is no hard and fast dollar amount that you need to earn to qualify as a small business….
If you are selling artwork online or offline with the goal of earning a profit – then you are in business.
If on the other hand you sale artwork simply for fun and never earn a profit – then your activity would most likely be viewed as a hobby. (You can earn money from a hobby but if you earn more than your costs – this is considered taxable business income)
The rules are a little tricky – but I would say if you are wanting to start a business – and based upon your plan you feel it will be profitable – you are in business – Congrats.

You can make $0 and still be considered a small business :) You may need a business license to sell though, so check into that for your state.

Small businesses are defined as any with 500 employees or less.
